What I Said on the Podcast (And What I Actually Meant.)

There are conversations that feel like a meeting. And then there are the ones that feel like a continuation.


Forty-eight minutes went fast.

That's what it was like sitting down with Jessie Ford and Jaime Wright, the co-hosts of Talk Branding To Me, for Episode 13 back in June. Jessie, Jaime and I have known each other for years. We've watched each other's businesses grow up, fall apart a little, and grow up again. So when they asked me to come on and talk about brand photography, it didn't feel like an interview at all. It felt like picking up where we left off.

And I've been sitting with one thing ever since. When they asked me to explain what a brand shoot actually is, I caught myself reaching for old language. Photography marketing catch phrases. The kind of vocabulary I developed years ago when the whole industry was talking about the same five words. I've been retiring those words from my own brand for a while now, but in conversation, muscle memory is real.

So here's my second attempt. In writing, where I'm most at home.

Your images walk into the room before you do.

Before anyone hears your voice. Before you shake a hand or sit across from someone at a table. The people who will eventually hire you, refer you, follow you for three years before they say a word, they've already met you. They met you on your website at 11pm in their kitchen. They met you on Instagram between two other things they don't remember. They made a decision about you before you knew they existed.

A brand shoot is your introduction. Designed and built on purpose, for that moment.

That's it. Everything else is details.

The thing Jessie, Jaime and I got into that I loved, the question I actually want people to sit with, is this: what's the difference between looking like yourself and looking like your brand?

Because there is one. And it matters.

The casual version of you is real. The one who laughs too loud at a good story, shows up to a Zoom call in something comfortable, and tells a meandering anecdote that somehow lands perfectly at the end. She's great. People love her.

Your brand is a more intentional version of the same person. Polished, considered, showing up in a way that communicates something before you open your mouth. Not a character. Not a performance. Just you, with the volume turned up in exactly the right places.

Those two versions aren't competing. They're a spectrum. And the magic, the actual visual magic of a great brand session, happens right where they meet. Where what you actually are and how you show up professionally finally agree with each other.

When those things align, the right people feel it immediately. The wrong-fit people quietly move on.

Both of those outcomes are the point.

Here's what nobody says about being photographed.

The images are only as good as what happened in the room.

You can have the best glass, the most beautiful location, the outfit that finally makes you feel like yourself. And if you don't feel safe in front of that lens, none of it comes through. None of it.

My job is to make you forget I'm doing my job. To create enough ease that you stop posing and start existing. That you say something actually funny and laugh before you remember you're on camera. That moment, the one right before you recompose yourself, that's the shot.

I've been chasing it for eight years. It never gets old.

Kim Davidson Jones is why I do this work.

She's the founder of Lock and Key Home Organization in Louisville, KY and she has been in front of my camera long enough that we have a whole history together. A whole evolution. She came in nervous once. She doesn't anymore.

For this session, she chose a client's home. She showed up in a wardrobe she had carefully put together, not to look like herself, to look like the next version of herself. The team director. The business owner who has built something real and knows it now.

She sat down in front of my camera and immediately had this huge smile on her face. Not a photograph smile. A real one. The kind that happens when you're exactly where you're supposed to be and you know it.

We shot her solo images. Then with her team leads. Then we all piled into the back of the Lock and Key work van and nobody was performing anything. They were laughing. Cracking jokes the way they do every single day on the job. I was shooting as fast as I could and laughing along with them, which is not my most technically disciplined work but it might be my favorite kind.

We wrapped in the backyard as the afternoon light did exactly what afternoon light does when you let it. Short video clips. Good energy. At some point we both said the same thing at the same time.

We could shoot together all day.

The images Kim walked away with look like Kim. They look like her brand. They look like the leader she has become, and her audience feels that in every frame. Approachable, sharp, a little funny, completely herself.

That alignment is the whole job. Every time.
